NESHPES was created by five founding members over the winter of 1982 at Denmill Stud in Alford. The Society was formed by Catriona McArdle, Duncan McArdle, Cameron Sinclair, Karen Stewart and Robin Stewart.
The aim of the Society was to encourage Highland Pony breeders and owners to socialise and to encourage more Highland Ponies to get out in the public eye at shows and events.
The Society was duly formed with funding of £1.00 per person, giving us a total reserve of £5.00!
It was formally launched at Echt Show on 9th July 1983 and by the end of the day membership had increased to 14, includng amongst others, the then Highland Pony Society President Mrs A C McIntosh and the first recorded member, Mr Charlie McQuattie, the then Highland Pony Society Vice President.
Within the first year, Mr Whitehead of Bakers in Aberdeen's Union Street, donated the Whitehead Trophy in memory of his Highland Pony Blue Boy, whom he lost to Equine Grass Sickness. This is still awarded to this day and is presented to the member gaining the most points at North-east shows.
The Society is still going strong, hosting two annual showing shows, organising rides, stud visits, social nights and annual awards scheme.
Our annual summer show was held in Aberdeen's Duthie Park for over 20 years.
